EPILEPSY
What is Epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a disorder that results in a breakdown of electrical activity in the brain. The electrical stimuli in the normal brain are constantly communicating between billions of neurons and various body parts involving voluntary (walking e.g.) or involuntary (breathing e.g.) movements. Dysfunction of the normal nerve cells causes normal functioning of electrical activity pattern to deteriorate. Damaged nerves become extremely excitable, causing consciousness to be temporarily lost and resulting in abnormal motor activity. Although most epilepsy patients can survive without a seizure by appropriate treatment, 20-30% of patients require surgery to stop their seizures.
