DYSTONIA

Dystonia is a movement disorder that causes involuntary muscle spasm and contractions. These muscular contractions force one or more parts of the body to repetitive, bending movements and abnormal postures. Dystonia can affect a part of the body (spasmodic torticollis) as well as the whole body (generalized dystonia). In a very small number of patients, the cause of dystonia can be determined. These include trauma, cerebral palsy, genetic causes, and drug poisoning. Botulinum toxin injection inhibits nerve and reduces abnormal contractions and spasms. However, several types of drugs are used in combination with treatment but have limited efficacy.
